Royal Automobile Club takes chequered flag in Annual Inter-Club Quiz

7th September 2006
Hosted by the National Liberal Club

The combined forces of the Royal Automobile Club and the Hurlingham Club claimed victory in the second annual Inter-Club Quiz. Hosted by reigning champions from 2005, the National Liberal Club, a close fought contest saw the Carlton Club and National Liberal Club taking the contest right down to the wire in the final round, with the Lansdowne Club bringing up the rear after an equally tight race between them and the 'Over Seas Farmers' (a.k.a. a combined team from the Farmers Club and the Royal Over Seas League) for last place. With the winner taking home not only the Inter-Club Quiz Shield, but also securing the right of hosting the next year's event, a tie-breaker question saw the Royal Automobile Club take the ultimate honour, defeating their team-mates from the Hurlingham alongside whom they had previously fought throughout the evening.

Compèred by the Carlton Club's very own comic double act Connor and Mike, the evening began with a dinner of guinea fowl main course and a dessert of Torta Della Nonna before the (allegedly) best and brightest younger members from London's Clubland pitted their wits and general knowledge for the privilege of being named 'Inter-Club Quiz Champions, 2006'.

Rounds included a picture round, sports, music, geography, popular culture, history and a 'spot-the-link' round, with the debate still raging as to whether the questions got progressively harder as the evening wore on, or if it was more the fact that the free flowing wine had dulled the mind. As the evening drew to a close, some questions such as 'Name the largest island on the largest lake on the largest island on the largest fresh water lake' required maximum brain power just to decipher the question, nevermind actually conjure up an answer.

The evening climaxed with the trophy presentation, and a vote of thanks from the Younger Members' Inter-Club Group to the Secretary of the National Liberal Club for putting on an excellent event that was enjoyed by all.

The Inter-Club Trophy is now proudly on display at the Royal Automobile Club where its younger members can still be heard telling anyone at the bar who will listen, the largest island on the largest lake on the largest island on the largest fresh water lake is, in fact, Treasure Island.
