the seventh annual club quiz

The Inter-Club Quiz
was, as always, a hard-fought contest. Boffins came from the length
of breadth of St James’s, all eager to demonstrate their academic
prowess. Questions ranged from James Bond to Hong Kong and there
were rounds devoted to music, Mr Men and guessing the flavour of the
jelly bean. Those who knew the name of Britain's longest lived Head
of State (Richard Cromwell since you ask) could feel justly proud -
even if it is less encouraging that only one team managed to name a
year during which Rembrandt was alive.
This was the first
year without James Scott in the chair but he was able to keep an eye
on things while serving as "lovely assistant" to the new quizmaster,
Craig Barrett. It was remarked that Craig managed to combine the
searching questions of John Humphrys with the genial charm of
Stephen Fry and the self-effacing modesty of Noel Edmonds - no mean
feat.
Seventy four people
sat down to dinner and ten Clubs took part (either fielding a whole
team or forming part of a composite team). The Carlton, as last
year's winners, played host and our thanks are due to their staff
for laying on a tremendous evening.
Competition was
close and a number of different Clubs took the lead during the
course of the evening. However, none could match the encyclopaedic
knowledge of the Savage Club and it was the Savages who bore away
the trophy. We look forward to enjoying their hospitality next
year.
