TENNIS TOURNAMENT AND BARBEQUE 2010

After the success of last year’s event, the queens club welcomed back inter-clubbers with open arms on Sunday 22nd August. The event started off as all Sunday mornings should – with a bacon sandwich, in the clubs restaurant. Inter-club tennis fans limbered up (some trying their best to shake off hangovers from their Saturday festivities), and play started at about 11am.

Sadly we didn’t have the scorching sunshine of last year – but the club Queen’s staff were well prepared and the indoor carpet courts were our surface of choice this time round. ‘Round robin’ groups were played out, with players pairing up with a different partner each match, and the winners of each group going onto the final.

Some exciting (and some ‘interesting’) tennis ensued, but the crowd were kept entertained with Anthony Wagstaff’s jugs of pimms, and eventually the final 4 were decided. Despite suspicions of a queens ‘fix up’ with 3 of our players in the final, this was not the case and the lunch ticket-holders (who had turned up in force) were treated to an exciting final.

After such an active morning, everyone was more than ready for lunch and more drink, and the clubs catering staff didn’t disappoint. Due to the weather, lunch was served in the club’s newly refurbished President’s room, a delicious buffet with wine served in plentiful amounts. Many of the members and guests then stayed and spent the afternoon drinking on the terrace, overlooking the clubs hallowed centre court.

All in all a great time was had by all concerned, and the Queen’s club looks forward to hosting the inter-club again next year!
