TENNIS TOURNAMENT AND BARBEQUE 2011

Sunday 21st August was the third such event organised by Anthony Wagstaff at the Queens Club. 60 visitors from a variety of London Clubs were welcomed by Nikki Rawden and Karen Hazzard to Queens, for a day of tennis organised by Chris Northey, and a considerable amount of eating and drinking organised by Attila Kerekes and his team.

There were representatives from the Oxford and Cambridge, Lansdowne, Hurlingham, Royal Overseas League, RAC, Army and Navy, In and Out, Caledonian, The National Liberal Club, and Queens Club itself, in the persons of Toby Eyre, Rebecca Marques and Alex Kurkjian, last year’s Champion.

A bacon- roll Breakfast was served in the Club Restaurant at 9.30am.

Heavy rain on Saturday precluded the use of the grass until midday, but play began promptly at 10.30am on a number of indoor and outdoor courts. At noon the weather had improved sufficiently to allow everyone to move outside, into the sunshine, where Pimms was served to all, which did seem to improve the quality of the tennis.

A five round/nine game format with a tie break at four games all, led to some excitingly close matches for all the players but by 2.00pm

Richard Lumley (Army and Navy) and Alex Kurkjian (Queens Club) emerged as the runners up,

But the 2011 Champions and winners of the Champagne and Trophy were James Taylor (Army and Navy) and Sarah Willis (Putney LTC).

A buffet lunch and more Pimms were served during the afternoon and several players had to be poured into taxis by Queens Club staff at the end of the day.
